These types of third-party videos are considered \u201cuser generated content.\u201d Often thought by viewers to be more authentic than company-produced marketing videos, they can make your brand seem more trustworthy and help win new business.<\/p>\n<p>As the New York Times recently pointed out, nearly anyone can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/17\/smarter-living\/beginners-guide-phone-video.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">easily create great-looking video with their phone<\/a>.\u00a0This is excellent news for brands looking to encourage their customers to create brand-focused content.<\/p>\n<p>So the real question is: How do you inspire people to create videos about your offerings? Read on to find out.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>1. Start From the Very Beginning<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re thinking about incorporating user generated content into your video marketing efforts, it&#8217;s a good idea to audit what is already out there. If possible, try to gather the content you find in one place.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll learn what you have to work with, and also get an idea of the types of things people like to talk about in regards to your brand. This is key information for planning a <a href=\"https:\/\/sproutvideo.com\/blog\/how-small-business-benefits-from-user-generated-content.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">user generated content campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Search for Your Brand and Products<\/h4>\n<p>To begin, conduct a Google search for your brand\u2019s name. This should surface any YouTube videos, websites (including blogs), and social media platforms where your company name is mentioned. A quick search across social media platforms can\u2019t hurt, either, to ensure you catch anything Google might have missed.<\/p>\n<p>In your searches, it\u2019s a good idea to try variations on your company\u2019s name. Include common misspellings, just in case the person who published the content made a typo, or got your name wrong for some other reason. You should also search for any brand-specific hashtags people may have used when talking about your brand.<\/p>\n<p>While hunting for content, keep an eye out for brand-related pictures as well.\u00a0You may be able to use pictures people have shared to create your video, so it\u2019s worth it to include these in your search, too.<\/p>\n<h4>Proper Attribution and Permissions<\/h4>\n<p>If you are going to use someone else\u2019s video or picture in your company\u2019s video,\u00a0one important thing you must do is ask for their permission. Due to copyright laws, social media platform terms, and image licensing, using someone else&#8217;s content online almost always requires permission, so asking is your best bet. Just because they made content about your brand doesn&#8217;t mean you can use it as you see fit!<\/p>\n<p>Since we recommend thanking people for sharing their (positive) video or picture about your brand anyway, you can simply ask for their permission to use it when you\u2019re thanking them. Most people will be flattered and excited you want to use their video!<\/p>\n<h3>2. Help Capture a Special Moment<\/h3>\n<p>If you want people to know your company takes user generated content seriously, show them like Adidas recently did at the 2018 Boston Marathon.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GaI4h4TPnos?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Adidas managed to create a personalized video for every Marathon runner by inserting RFID chips into their race bibs so that they could locate them and track their their pace at any point during the race. On race day, they sent out a film crew with eight cameras to capture personalized footage and <a href=\"https:\/\/sproutvideo.com\/blog\/25-cool-places-and-spaces-to-shoot-b-roll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">b-roll<\/a>. Then, within 24 hours, they edited down the 27 hours of footage they\u2019d captured to create a video just like the one above for every single one of the 30,000 runners.<\/p>\n<p>By focusing on the runners in such a personalized way, yet on such a large scale, Adidas has simultaneously shown their commitment to the community, increased their video reach and engagement, and raised the bar on video marketing.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first or even the most recent time Adidas has excelled with video.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In March, they leveraged their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/2018\/03\/22\/adidas-micro-influencer-long-form-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tango Squad influencers<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/sproutvideo.com\/blog\/long-form-video-growing-trend.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long-form video<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In April, they released a video meant to connect their audience with some of <a href=\"http:\/\/footwearnews.com\/2018\/focus\/athletic-outdoor\/baseball-opening-day-adidas-cleats-aaron-judge-carlos-correa-kris-bryant-1202543920\/\">baseball\u2019s hottest players<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Also in April, Adidas launched an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2018\/04\/18\/snapchat-has-launched-app-ar-shopping-with-adidas-and-coty-among-the-first-sellers\">AR shopping experience<\/a> as one of Snapchat\u2019s first sellers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that the brand is so connected to its audience. In fact, user generated content was specifically cited as a reason Adidas was named an <a href=\"http:\/\/footwearnews.com\/2018\/focus\/athletic-outdoor\/adidas-vs-nike-survey-best-shoes-1202548944\/\">\u201conline genius\u201d<\/a>&#8230; Take notes!<\/p>\n<h3>3. Show Some Love to Your MVPs and VIPs<\/h3>\n<p>Does anyone in particular come to mind when you think about <a href=\"https:\/\/sproutvideo.com\/blog\/how-to-put-your-customers-on-camera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">your customers<\/a> or clients? Perhaps someone who was an early adopter, someone who renews their subscription every renewal period, or someone who is very active and complimentary in the Comments section of your company\u2019s Facebook page?<\/p>\n<p>Chances are they not only like your products or services, but they know them well. They&#8217;ll be able to speak to the pain points that many potential customers like them may be experiencing. Create Event Experiences They Can\u2019t Wait to Share<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re planning an event, don\u2019t just consider the marketing you have to do to promote the event. Make It A Competition<\/h3>\n<p>A contest requiring participants to submit video entries is a great way to collect user generated content for your video campaigns. Determine what you&#8217;d like to highlight in your next video, and make it the focus for your contest. Assign the contest a hashtag and be sure to interact with contestants as they submit videos.<\/p>\n<p>One of the benefits of social media contests like this are the flexible nature of them. You can design it according to your video content needs and the resources you have to run the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, you can require that the participants show themselves using your product, or include three reasons they love it. You can also design the contest to be a large, ongoing campaign incorporating online voting by the public. Periodically gift winners a prize or cash, or feature them on your website and social media pages.<\/p>\n<p>User generated content in the form of video provides strong social proof for your brand.
