Just look at the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/business\/ct-biz-papa-johns-apologizes-nfl-anthem-protests-20171115-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scandal that engulfed Papa John&#8217;s<\/a> after they\u00a0weighed in on the NFL protests. So, how does a brand responsibly take on a serious and potentially divisive issue? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One strategy that has worked well in the past is a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video. With full control over the message and optics, you can carefully craft a\u00a0video that best communicates your position. Here are the five key ingredients for a\u00a0powerful PSA video, and the eight steps you need to take to make your own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>A Short History of the PSA<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PSAs originated\u00a0in the United States and the United Kingdom as short, educational films advocating for public safety concerns. During World War II, they quickly evolved to include government-commissioned short videos to help scale positive public sentiment about the war efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oftentimes, these public safety commercials would feature familiar characters, and cover the \u201chot\u201d topics of the day. Many will recall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U6xMd0wSbZc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smokey Bear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201conly you can prevent forest fires\u201d slogan, or the \u201cthis is your brain on drugs\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3FtNm9CgA6U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frying egg visual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S. today, many\u00a0TV stations are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to broadcast in the public interest. The PSA remains a popular way to meet that requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps you\u2019re familiar with this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Iu_JqNdp2As\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tear-inducing example<\/a>\u00a0from the ASPCA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? As proven over time, PSAs can be a powerful vehicle for raising awareness and changing public attitudes towards a\u00a0particular issue. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the 1960\u2019s, Corporate Social Responsibility has been a part of the consumer vocabulary. With the explosion of the internet and social media in more recent years, buyers are increasingly interested not just in what a business offers, but also in what that brand stands for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no wonder that, according to this <a href=\"https:\/\/odpowiedzialnybiznes.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/publikacje_2015_cone_communications_ebiquity_global_csr_study.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015 study<\/a>, nine in 10 consumers expect companies to not only make a profit, but to also operate responsibly to address social and environmental issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s all well and good, but you certainly want to make sure people are aware of your efforts, and the causes you&#8217;re championing. That&#8217;s where PSA videos come in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to integrating CSR into your everyday business practices, a PSA video is an extremely effective way to quickly garner attention on an issue your company cares about. It is one of the best ways of making compelling emotional appeals, especially to millennials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Getting Started: What is an Effective PSA Comprised of?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An effective PSA must be well-thought out and planned ahead of time (something we go into further detail on below). First, we\u2019ll share five key tips, including examples, for getting it right.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Timeliness<\/h3>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose an issue already on the general public&#8217;s radar, you&#8217;ll benefit in several ways. For starters, your\u00a0campaign can tap into elevated search traffic for terms related to the topic. This means you&#8217;re more likely to be heard and to get traction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, your audience will most likely be familiar with the topic. This gives you the liberty to dive into the heart of the matter, saving valuable video time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will also show your audience that you are listening and\u00a0paying attention to\u00a0what is happening in the world. To summarize EJI\u2019s Bryan Stevenson, race relations is an issue that you\u2019re affected by \u201cwhether you were born in 1930 or 2017\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The video\u00a0features voiceover from Stevenson, and haunting pictures from the past and the present. Only the medium of video\u00a0can\u00a0deliver a message\u00a0in such an impactful way. Overall, the video really leverages the fact that this serious issue is rightfully at the forefront of many people\u2019s minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Relevancy<\/h3>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, the issue\u00a0your company chooses to address will not only be relevant to your brand, but also speak directly to your target market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great example of this comes from AT&amp;T. They took a stand against something\u00a0nearly every driver has been guilty of: texting and driving. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it might be surprising that an anti-texting ad is coming from a phone plan provider, it makes sense for the company to encourage customers to\u00a0be safe drivers. The ad begins with ordinary people going about their lives. As the video reaches a its climax, phone<\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0notifications keep going off and the driver checks them. She doesn\u2019t seem to be driving fast and, in fact, there aren\u2019t many other cars on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, before you know it, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CRASH<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shattered glass. The point is clear: in the big picture, the notifications just aren\u2019t important. They can wait. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick note: AT&amp;T clearly did their homework when creating their PSA. Texting and driving is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/nation\/study-texting-while-driving-now-leading-cause-of-death-for-teen-drivers-y91362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading cause of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for teenage drivers. Kudos to the company for highlighting the issue in such a powerful way, and for continuing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itcanwait.com\/?WT.srch=1&amp;source=ECPS0000000PSM00P&amp;wtpdsrchprg=&amp;wtpdsrchgp=ABS_SEARCH&amp;wtPaidSearchTerm=it%20can%20wait&amp;wtpdsrchpcmt=it%20can%20wait&amp;kid=kwd-34363685694&amp;cid=652831117&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0N6F2uC01wIVVTyBCh11rgIbEAAYASAAEgKZKPD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to encourage safe texting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Humor<\/h3>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps after that last example, you might think all PSAs must be Serious with a capital \u201cS\u201d. That\u2019s not necessarily true. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to some issues, being too serious can make it that much more difficult to address them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to consider your audience. Does a lighthearted approach make sense? In Burger King\u2019s case, it absolutely did. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While their audience isn\u2019t solely teens, a large portion of it is. So, it was important for Burger King\u00a0to use \u201clanguage\u201d teens would readily understand. And, everyone knows teen language is sarcasm and humor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ordinarily, bullying is no laughing matter. But, insert a \u201cbullied\u201d burger into the mix, and things get downright silly.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mnKPEsbTo9s&#038;feature=youtu.be<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its aptly named \u201cBullying Jr.\u201d PSA, Burger King captures and holds our attention by presenting the serious issue in a not-so-serious way by juxtaposing teen bullying and burger bullying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, most customers are bewildered when their burger is served \u201cbullied.\u201d They insist Burger King employees make it right, even demanding to speak to management for the Whopper offense. However, just a fraction of those customers demand any justice for the teen bullying that is also happening while they\u2019re dining in the fast food restaurant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the handful that even notice it, only a couple of people address the problem. Between footage of the customers being bewildered, or stepping in to help out a bullied teen, Burger King serves up cold, hard facts and statistics about bullying. They include just enough reality to balance out the silliness of \u201cbullied burgers\u201d. Good job, Burger King.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Emotional<\/h3>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think companies can\u2019t get emotional? Think again. Video provides an opportunity to tell a story, and elicit the feelings of your audience in a way that no other online medium can. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"84 Lumber Super Bowl Commercial | The Entire Journey\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nPo2B-vjZ28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immigration-focused PSA \u201cThe Entire Journey\u201d by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.84lumber.com\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7o-8jfm01wIVEKlpCh2_pADdEAAYASAAEgIOL_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84 Lumbar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes viewers along for the perilous trek a young migrant and her daughter endure in their journey to becoming American citizens. Whichever side of the immigration debate you fall on, seeing two vulnerable yet determined people tirelessly work towards their goal is bound to provoke\u00a0a reaction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that the commercial received some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/903902\/84-lumbers-super-bowl-51-commercial-the-story-behind-the-most-emotionally-gripping-ad-of-the-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for taking too long to get to the (not entirely clear) point. That said, the gripping story portrayed in their video generated a lot of online buzz for the otherwise not very well-known private company. According to 84 Lumbar, it helped them reach their goal of generating many new entry-level job applicants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Honesty<\/h3>\n<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the preceding examples are instances where a company chose to throw its hat in the ring. This fifth example is very different. In this case, the company\u00a0made the PSA video\u00a0in response to criticism for not taking on the issue more directly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the National Football League (NFL) faced serious backlash from the general public due to their failure to address domestic violence and sexual assault, issues that several of the League\u2019s most popular players had been involved in.<\/p>\n<p>One such incident included Baltimore Ravens star running back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VbwTMJroTbI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Rice who was caught on camera<\/a> knocking out his fiancee and dragging her unconscious body from an elevator. Initially, Rice was suspended for two games.<\/p>\n<p>However once the public saw the video, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came under fire for it (and other incidences). The NFL knew it had to make a statement about domestic violence in a big way.<\/p>\n<p>Finally showing they understood the severity of the issue, the League sponsored Super Bowl 2015 airtime for the NoMore.org organization to air the powerful \u201cListen\u201d PSA. While one sponsored commercial isn\u2019t enough on it\u2019s own, this\u00a0video shows what an impact it can have to kick off dialogue and positive change.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Listen: 60 (NO MORE&#039;s Official Super Bowl 49 Ad)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rTJT3fVv1vU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These types of PSA videos must be handled extremely carefully. They risk missing the mark and falling flat or, worse yet, possibly looking defensive. We think this particular\u00a0PSA video manages to address the issue head on, without any fallout for the brand.<\/p>\n<h2>Creating Your PSA: The Steps<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, ready to make your own PSA video? Here are the steps to follow: <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Select your PSA topic<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure it makes sense for your company to back the issue or, at the very least, that it is something that you\u2019re passionate about. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Determine the goal of your PSA<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you trying to spread general awareness? Kick off a campaign? Be controversial? Understand what you hope to achieve before you get started, and keep it in mind as your\u00a0craft your PSA. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Determine your target audience<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like any other video, or marketing effort for that matter, it\u2019s important\u00a0to be mindful of who you\u2019re talking to. Understand whether serious language and music will speak to them more, or if you\u2019re better off using humor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Storyboard<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan out the shots you\u2019ll need in detail. You&#8217;ll know the who, what, when, and where throughout the production process.
