Connect an AI assistant to SproutVideo (MCP)

What the SproutVideo MCP server does

The SproutVideo MCP server lets AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, and AI coding tools work with your SproutVideo account in plain language. Instead of writing code for our API, you can ask the assistant to find a video, change its privacy, build a playlist, pull engagement numbers, or set up a live stream, and it calls SproutVideo on your behalf.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI assistants use to connect to outside services. Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers can connect to SproutVideo. The MCP server is available on all plans; some capabilities depend on your plan, noted below.

The server address is the same for all assistants:

https://api.sproutvideo.com/mcp

What you can do

The assistant sees a set of tools grouped by area. Describe what you want in your own words, and the assistant picks the appropriate tools.

Area What the assistant can do
Videos List and search your library, view a video’s details and embed code. Change its title, description, privacy, password, folder, tags, download settings and player settings, pick a poster frame, upload a new video from a URL or from your computer, replace a video’s source file.
Folders, Tags, Playlists Create, rename, move, and organize folders; create and apply tags; build playlists, set their order, privacy, and poster frame.
Sharing Manage viewer logins and access grants for login-protected videos, including bulk access grants, play limits, access windows, and download permissions..
Subtitles and Calls to Action Add, edit, publish, or remove subtitle tracks; add and edit calls to action on a video.
Live Streams Create and configure live streams, update their settings, and end a stream.
Analytics Account overview, per-video stats, popular videos and downloads, plays by country, domain, and device, engagement and playback sessions, and the same for live streams. Requires a plan that includes analytics.
Account Read and update account-wide settings such as default download and player options, allowed domains, webhook URL, and live stream archiving. Owners and admins only.

Deleting videos, folders, playlists, tags, logins, grants, subtitles, calls to action, and live streams, and replacing a video’s file, are kept out of the assistant’s reach by default. See Letting the assistant delete or replace.

Connecting your assistant

In every case you paste the server address into the assistant, then sign in to SproutVideo and approve the connection. You never enter an API key; the assistant gets its own credential, which you can revoke at any time.

Claude (web and desktop)

You can find the SproutVideo Connector here.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http sproutvideo https://api.sproutvideo.com/mcp

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and choose Authenticate next to SproutVideo to sign in.

ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings, then Plugins. Click Browse Plugins and click the “+” at the top right of the page next to the plugins search bar. Custom plugins will require developer mode to be enabled on your ChatGPT account.
  2. Create a plugin using the server address above, then sign in when prompted.

Codex CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Antigravity, and other MCP-capable tools

Add a remote (HTTP) MCP server with the address above. Most tools accept a configuration entry like this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sproutvideo": {
      "url": "https://api.sproutvideo.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

In VS Code, the Command Palette action MCP: Add Server with the HTTP option does the same. Your tool will open the SproutVideo sign-in the first time it connects.

Who the assistant acts as

The connection acts as you: the SproutVideo user who approved it, with your role on the selected account.

  • Owners and admins get every tool, including account settings.
  • Editors get everything except the account settings tools.
  • Every change the assistant makes is recorded in your account’s activity log under your name, just like a change made in the browser.

Each teammate who wants to use an assistant connects it with their own SproutVideo login.

Letting the assistant delete or replace

By default the assistant cannot delete anything or replace a video’s source file, because an assistant’s confirmation prompts vary and those actions can’t be undone. If you want to allow them, add ?destructive=true to the server address when you connect:

https://api.sproutvideo.com/mcp?destructive=true

You can also limit a connection to certain areas, which keeps the assistant focused and saves its context. Add ?toolsets= with one or more of: videos, folders, playlists, tags, sharing, subtitles, calls_to_action, live_streams, analytics, account.

https://api.sproutvideo.com/mcp?toolsets=videos,analytics

A misspelled area name is refused with an error naming the valid ones, rather than silently giving the assistant every tool.

Uploading videos and poster frames

Video files never pass through the assistant. When you ask it to upload a video it will do one of two things:

  • If the file is already online, it hands SproutVideo the URL and we download it.
  • If the file is on your computer, it creates a single-use upload token and gives you a short command (a curl line) to run; the file goes straight from your machine to SproutVideo. Assistants that can run commands, such as Claude Code, run it for you.

Poster frames work the same way: the assistant can pick one of the auto-generated frames, or give you a command to upload an image.

Disconnecting

Remove the connector in your assistant, and revoke its access in SproutVideo under your account’s Authorized Applications page. Once revoked, the assistant’s next request is refused and it will ask you to sign in again.

Limits

  • Assistant requests count toward your account’s API rate limit, 1,000 requests per minute on most plans. The assistant is told the limit and how long to wait if it is reached.
  • Analytics tools require a plan with analytics.
  • Assistant requests do not appear in the API request log in your account; they appear in the activity log instead.
  • The server offers tools only. It does not provide prompts or file resources to the assistant.

Troubleshooting

Symptom What it means
The approval screen warns the app isn’t verified The assistant isn’t on our list of recognized tools. Approve it only if you installed it yourself.
The assistant says a tool isn’t available Either it’s a delete or replace action (add ?destructive=true), an account settings action and you’re an editor, or the connection was narrowed with ?toolsets=.
Connection fails immediately with “unknown toolset” Check the spelling of the ?toolsets= names in the server address.
The assistant is asked to sign in again The connection was revoked or expired. Sign in again to continue.
“Rate limit exceeded” Your account’s per-minute API limit was reached. The assistant should wait and retry; if it doesn’t, wait a minute and try again.
A video uploaded from the assistant shows “inspecting” or “processing” Normal. Processing continues in the background; ask the assistant for the video again in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the assistant have my API key? No. It gets its own credential tied to your login, which you approve on our site and can revoke at any time.

Can I limit what it’s allowed to do? Yes: your account role decides the account-settings tools, deletes and replacements are off unless you turn them on, and ?toolsets= restricts the areas it can see.

Can I see what it did? Yes. Every change appears in your account’s activity log under your name.

Does it count towards my plan’s usage? Uploading new videos and streaming videos count toward your total storage and monthly bandwidth usage. Requests count against the API rate limit.

Is the SproutVideo MCP server free? Yes.
